An unknown composer from Groningen is finally letting his songs be heard.
Johan Zwart is a composer from Groningen, originally from Leek, who rose to prominence in the Groningen pop scene during the 1980s after completing his studies at the Conservatory of Groningen. After many years of travelling and musical exploration, he eventually settled in Norway, where he has continued to write an impressive body of work ever since — consisting of highly catchy and distinctly hit-oriented songs in both Dutch and English.
Johan’s versatility is remarkable. He does not shy away from any genre and consistently succeeds in shaping each style into a strong, well-crafted song. Modesty comes naturally to him, while his artistic drive finds its outlet in his creative work. In addition to composing music, Johan has also developed himself as a visual artist, creating paintings and pen drawings that reflect the same sensitivity and expressive depth found in his music.
With some musicians, you immediately sense it: the moment they sit down behind an instrument, something special happens. Their musicality reaches out and connects. With Johan Zwart, this is undeniably the case.
At present, around ten of his songs are in production and available on Spotify, but this is only the beginning — there is much more waiting in the pipeline.
Het begon met een van de beste bands in Groningen
Cigarsky in Smoking krijgt vorm in 1984. De groep omschrijft de muziek als 'modern, speels en stijlvol'.
De groep ontstaat wanneer Johan Zwart en Jan van Herp een muziekproject hebben afgerond genaamd Before You Could Say Jack Robinson. Ze gaan op zoek naar nieuwe bandleden om een andere, nieuwe weg in te slaan. Audities vinden plaats in het plattelandshuisje van de zanger (Jan van Herp) in Garsthuizen.
De bandleden, met een diversiteit aan (klassieke) achtergronden, componeren samen de songs met een kenmerkende moderne Cigarski Sound. Cigarsky in Smoking heeft veel optredens in het noorden. De groep staat op de grote noordelijke festivals, maar blijft ook niet onopgemerkt binnen het popcircuit van Nederland zoals bijvoorbeeld met hun optreden tijdens de Grote Prijs van Nederland.
De demo's
In 1984 komt de eerste titelloze demo uit en in 1985 de tweede. Opnames worden gemaakt in de studio van het Popburo. Guno Kramer verlaat na een jaar de band en vertrekt hij naar de Amsterdamse band Fra Fra Sound.
Henry Kramer, de broer van Guno, vervangt Guno op drums bij Cigarsky in Smoking.
Eind 1985, begin 1986 verlaten beide zangeressen de band. Na een auditie worden Bonnie Boonstra en Barbara Jelijs gekozen als hun opvolgers. Een paar weken later, juli 1986, stopt men met de band.
Jan van Herp werkte geruime tijd op het Popburo.
